Who says that having shinier and healthier mane requires expensive salon treatment? With do-it-yourself (DIY) hair masks, you don’t need to waste your time and money since attaining healthier mane is done in the comfort of your own home.

Creating DIY hair care recipes is like preparing your favourite home-cooked meals; it’s fun and exciting at the same time budget-friendly.

So, if you are prepared to make your very own DIY hair masks, then here’s the step-by-step process on creating two recipes specifically catered for different hair types.

Hair Care Recipe #1: Lemon and Baking Soda Hair Mask— for oily or greasy scalp and tresses.

Oily or greasy hair occurs due to the overproduction of sebum, which is secreted by the sebaceous glands. A DIY hair mask made from organic elements such as lemon and baking soda is helpful in controlling the sebum production in the scalp. Thus, preventing the onset of dandruff, which can clog up the pores, as well as regulating blood flow to encourage the proper delivery of nutrients and oxygen on the hair roots for the production of fuller and healthier hair strands.

What to Do:

In a bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 5 tablespoons of plain yogurt and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Then, blend the ingredients thoroughly until you can create a creamy paste. Next, apply the mixture  all over your scalp and hair. Let the oil control hair mask sit on your head for 15 minutes.  Afterwards, wash your hair thoroughly with an organic shampoo to remove the residue.

Hair Care Recipe #2: Olive oil and Mayonnaise Hair Mask — for dull, dry, and damaged tresses.

Dull, dry, and damaged tresses happens when the hair is overexposed to heated styling tools (e.g., curlers, permers, blow dryers and straighteners ) as well as the ultraviolet rays of the sun. It can also be due to the overuse of harsh colouring treatments and hairstyling products (e.g., mousses, gels, and sprays.

What to Do:

In a bowl, beat the egg. Then, mix it with 1 cup of real mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and 1 tablespoon of castor oil.  Next, thoroughly blend the ingredients to create a smooth creamy paste. Gently and gradually apply the hair mask on the scalp and the hair strands. Wrap your head with a soft clean towel, and let it sit  for an hour. Afterwards, remove the soft clean towel and wash your hair with a gently shampoo to get rid of the strong scent and the residue.
